The Runway Poet: Annees Sofea | #ytwalkoflife

When we met this month’s feature for #ytwalkoflife, we were drawn to her bubbly, outgoing nature and friendly demeanor. A spirited romantic who isn’t afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve, Annees Sofea is a head turner for more reasons than first meets the eye.

Lying in bed, scrolling through Instagram to load up that brain dam with style inspo – sounds like you? Then you’re probably already following the rising fashion Queen Annees Sofea, or at the very least, you’ve double tapped her photos. With a keen eye and a dash of daring, Annees puts together bold outfits that are always just a step ahead of the trends, inspiring her army of Instagram followers with every new post.

Annees describes her personal approach to fashion as street style glam, dressing herself in looks that are both relaxed and eye-catching at the same time. She accentuates her outfits with her favorite accessories of choice – piercings and makeup – constantly bending the rules and playing with color to make the perfect cherry on top to her style sundae.

“I was always the awkward, left-out one in school. I didn’t really have a lot of friends so I didn’t express myself much when I was around other people.”

To Annees, her rapidly growing social media following has come as a surprise. As a young girl, she had no idea that her love for playing dress up would develop into something more substantial; a passion that other people would be able to relate to and be inspired by.

“I was always the awkward, left-out one in school. I didn’t really have a lot of friends so I didn’t express myself much when I was around other people,” says Annees,  “I knew that I had some sort of interest in beauty, fashion and art, but the people around me, including my family, didn’t really see that potential in me.”

From a young age, Annees has always searched for creative outlets to express the feelings that she kept bottled within. While fashion can be seen as an extension of her creative, confident self, she turned to poetry as a means to tackle and expel the more troubling emotions. Self-love, doubt and pain are some prevalent themes in Annees’ poetry, and it is refreshing to see her confront these topics without pretense. Each poem reads like a diary entry, her confessions revealing the universal in the personal. She recalls writing her first Haiku poem when she was just fourteen.

“I was crying my heart out and I didn’t know what to do because nobody was around and I didn’t have anyone to share my emotions with. That’s when I picked up a pen and started writing. My first piece was written on a tissue. My cat was with me.”

She admits that her peers are often surprised by her poetry, as it reflects a side of her that her followers are rarely privy to. “Sometimes people don’t really think I am a writer when they look at my style. When they read my pieces, they tell me that it is a total contrast to how I portray myself.”

Annees shared one of her poems, “Temporary Love” with us.

love; they say it’s something destructive rather than

being something simply beautiful.

love,
it makes your lipstick smudge
your mascara, running down those peachy blushed cheeks.
those mesmerizing eyes framed with dark smokey,
pigments, washed off by tears of broken promises;
like gunshot eyes.

they say beautiful things are temporary; you know,
like makeup and love.

i agree.

The poem poignantly captures the pain of heartbreak and insecurity. The fleetingness of infatuations and a made-up face are a mere balm without the strong foundation of love and confidence. As with many of her poems, Annees reminds us that self-love and self-acceptance are priceless.

Annees recognizes the importance of poetry as a “cry-for-help medium”, an avenue for one to communicate deep-seated emotions that are not always easy to address, giving a voice to people who feel like they are silenced. While Annees has shared a couple of her poems on Instagram, she has kept her writing under wraps for the most part, only recently venturing to perform spoken word pieces on public platforms. When asked about plans to publish, she showed enthusiasm: “Definitely! I have a long way to go but publishing is a personal goal of mine!”

Armored with unwavering ambition and an innate drive to dive in head first into the things she believes in, Annees has worked her way up to a vantage point. She appreciates her current notoriety and growing influence, and the opportunities that come with it, but at 21 years old, the world is at her feet. By experimenting within her fields of interest and taking on exciting challenges and projects, she is paving the way for her future. Annees envisions herself working in the fashion industry, and hopes her social media presence will inspire young minds as they navigate life and style in tandem. We can’t wait to see where this girl goes!

Here’s what she has to say about the Yoke & Theam shoes.

What is your favorite shoe from the Yoke & Theam?

My favourite from the collection is the Emma Mules.

What is your favorite way to style the Emma Mules?

I like to style them with a pair of coloured see-through ankle socks! I love quirky socks. My Emma Mules come in white and blue, therefore I would match them with a pair of ankle socks from Monki since they have really nice designs that compliment the shoes.

Do you think these shoes are versatile?

Yes, I do. I can picture myself wearing them in many different kinds of styles.

The YT x Alia B collection prides itself on creating designs that marry style with comfort. Having tried the shoes, do you think we’ve achieved this?

Yes. I am really particular when it comes to comfort and wearability. This collection compliments both style and comfort.

How do you think the YT x Alia B collection compliments your personal style?

The collection is quite subtle and is a great add-on to my style. The collection offers great shoes for me to mix and match with my outfits.
